BOTANICAL UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE 2016
This is the brain-child of Dr M (School of Biological Sciences, University of Reading) John Warren (IBERS, University of Aberystwyth), and Paul Ashton (Edge Hill).
The first ever Botanical University Challenge
Will take place at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, hosted by James Wong, 2 pm Thursday 10th March 2016 Jodrell Lecture Theatre (Jodrell Laboratory building) TW9 3DS.
Preview: Try your luck – rounds will include:
Food, poison or drug – which are these are delectable and which diabolical? Camellia sinensis, Atropa belladonna, Cerbera odollam?
What’s in a Latin name – What do the following latin names mean? odorata, palustris and vulgaris? (pssssst! useful link here!)
Where in the World do these plants orginate from – Eucalyptus, Giant Sequoia, Kiwi fruit?
Record breakers – What is the worlds biggest seed? What is the UK’s tallest tree? What plant has the tiniest seeds?
There will also be a googly or two from left field to keep our teams on their botanical toes – Which meadow plant is named after cow poo?! (check here)
